  • Building Without Nails The Genius of Japanese Carpentry

We've heard of the genius "technology" used in ancient times to build towering monuments with nothing more than primitive tools like stones and ropes. The Egyptian pyramids of old is a great example. Back in the far east, Japan had plenty to offer the ancient world as well when it came to resourceful inventions and crafts. Traditional Japanese Carpenters built houses, temples, and castles, without the use of nails, screws, or bolts. In a documentary interviewing one of the few remaining practitioners of this seemingly lost art of carpentry, an old Japanese master craftsman exclaims "No bolts, no nails. It lasts longer!". Proudly claiming its effectiveness that no one would be able to argue against its success in the form of several majestic towering temples all over Japan still standing t...

Architect Camino Alonso wanted to create a small, portable, prefab homes, but she didn't want it to feel like a shipping container. Camino, along with her husband and siblings (also architects at their firm Ábaton), created ÁPH80, a tiny home that ships like furniture, but has the style and usability of a smartphone. Their Casa Transportable ("Transportable House") is manufactured in 6 weeks in a CNC factory in Northern Spain. Their largest model (9 by 3 meters) is still small enough to fit on the back of a truck. The height of 3.5 meters allows for a gabled roof to give it the feel of a real house, but it's just low enough to fit under bridges and tunnels while on the road. Once the house arrives at the site, like a shipping container, it is craned into place in as little as 20 minutes. When Ábaton installed their prototype house on an empty plot in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Madrid, they had dug a few small holes in preparation for the "foundation footings": in this case, recycled wood blocks leftover from other construction projects, but cement or a nice rock work as foundation as well. Ábaton provides instructions and sketches so any crane operator can put the home in place. The home arrive fully plumbed and wired. Their prototype home is the "apartment" with kitchen/living room, bathroom (with full shower) and bedroom (bed included), but they offer other models for those looking interested in simply placing an extra bedroom in their backyard (they offer several combinations e.g. a bedroom/bathroom, 2 bedrooms, living room/kitchen, bedroom/living room). CNC-milled grey cement-board panels lock together to provide not only a sleek exterior, but a ventilated facade. This layered exterior along with 10 centimeters of insulation means the home is thermally efficient - useful for off-grid purposes, but it also means that even without AC on a very hot day in Madrid, the inside of the space stayed cool. Ábaton: http://abaton.es Furniture by http://batavia.es A video with the Alonso's at the abandoned stable they turned into a country home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gcgz6aZ3jk. Price range: Beginning from a 2 room bedroom/bath combo that is 4.5 x 3 meters for 21.900€. It goes up from there with a 2 bedroom combo, living room/kitchen, bedroom/living, 2 bedrooms/1 bath. And finally, the tiny house shown in the video, the ÁPH80-A Apartment is 27 m2 (290 sq ft) and costs 42.800€. In this episode of Open Door, celebrity designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent (stars of TLC's Nate & Jeremiah By Design) give Architectural Digest a full-access house tour around their spectacular 1928 Spanish Colonial home in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The house clocks in at nearly 9,000 square feet. Past the front door there’s the gorgeous grand stairway with its original wrought-iron balustrade, straight out of a movie from Hollywood’s Golden Age. Then room after room bathed in glorious sunlight, gurgling fountains, and that heavenly oak tree, literally topping everything off. And, of course, there’s Poppy, the mistress of the manor. Not even Central Casting could produce a more scrumptious sprite. The house's facelift entailed installing floors of antique marble to demarcate points of entry and transition; stripping, bleaching, and waxing the existing mahogany paneling in the dining room; replacing fireplace mantels and hardware with antique models; reworking the kitchen with new fixtures and surfaces; and furnishing the many rooms of the home in signature Berkus-Brent style. As for what constitutes clean and masculine in this context, the designers layered the house with rustic French, Swedish, and American furnishings of wood and stone, juxtaposed with more tailored Continental pieces by the likes of Jacques Adnet, Maria Pergay, Angelo Mangiarotti, and Afra and Tobia Scarpa. The through line is the doggedly neutral palette; Berkus and Brent rely on texture and patina to animate their personal interiors. The one exception to the rainbow-of-beige rule is Poppy’s bedroom and playroom. In her bedroom, Poppy has the beginnings of a proper art collection, stocked with gifts from her parents’ friends, including a dreamy mobile by Julia Condon and a Michael Hainey hummingbird painting. For Berkus and Brent, the one other space that seems to deviate from the distilled masculinity of the rest of the house is the master bathroom, which features hand-painted murals by James Mobley along with architectural details of a Prunella marble richly veined in deep purple and brown. The couple took advantage of the ample space beyond the bathroom to install two very serious his-and-his closets. In the atrium, a 19th-century bench with Kravet-velvet upholstery sits atop antique Spanish tiles from Paris Ceramics. 19th-century English glass pendant; 1950s low table from a Paris flea market; vintage club chair in a Carolina Irving Textiles stripe. In the living room, a sofa by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, a circa-1950 Italian chair, and a pair of 1940s linen club chairs surround a marble cocktail table from Hollywood At Home. A 1950s Italian sconce hangs above a 1960s English bench covered in a Lee Jofa fabric; Belgian linen curtains by RH. In the kitchen, the island is surrounded by circa-1960 French barstools; sink fittings by Waterstone; 19th-century French lanterns. Backsplash and surrounding countertops by Ollin Stone; Whitechapel brass knobs. In the dining room, 1950s Jacques Adnet chairs join a 19th-century English table. A painting by Matt Connors hangs above a Directoire limestone mantel; circa-1970 Georges Pelletier ceramic pendant lights. In the gallery, a 19th-century Italian bookcase, an 18th-century Swedish table, and a 1950s American bench. The playroom's "memory" board and table, by RH Baby & Child; sofa and rug by RH Teen. Floor pillows and hippo basket from Anthropologie. In Poppy's room, a wallpaper by Apparatus and ZAK + FOX hosts art by Hunt Slonem, Michael Hainey, Fernando Bengoechea, and Mary Little. A Julia Condon mobile hangs over an armchair by Cisco Home wearing a Mexican Otomi textile; crib, table, and chair by RH Baby & Child; Nate Berkus stool for Target; Caitlin Wilson rug. In the master bath, a James Mobley mural and marble molding and panels from Waterworks. Tub by Signature Hardware, with Waterworks fittings; Duravit sink. Brent and Berkus's RH bed, dressed in Matteo linens, is flanked by 1970s Italian tables. The circa-1960 chairs wear an Edelman Leather suede. Circa-1950 French bronze saucer light; custom Roman shades by The Shade Store; Maria Pergay steel table; HD Buttercup rug. The pergola is painted in Benjamin Moore's Alabaster. RH pendant lights; vintage Kreiss chairs; Pottery Barn pillows. Poppy wears a Marysia Bumby swimsuit. Lecture from the 6th VELUX Daylight Symposium “Daylight as a driver of change” that took place in London on 2-3 September 2015. For more information visit http://thedaylightsite.com ABSTRACT The design of learning environments is a challenging, yet highly interesting field for many architects due to the complexity of factors affecting the creative process. Learning spaces are not merely an accommodating framework for students and teachers; the physical environment, if designed with consideration, can be one of the most influential factors for successful learning. In order to achieve spaces of high quality for students and teachers, the architect must be able to materialise the latest pedagogical and didactical theories in relation to the specific academic program for the school – taking into account cost constraints, building technological considerations and the conditions of the building site. The design of learning spaces should support the applied methods of teaching in the best possible way. A number of factors influence our spatial perception, and as such, form part of the architectural process; e.g. spatial organization, materials and indoor climate. Especially daylight conditions in schools have been subject to extensive research over the years. In 1874 Robson stressed the importance of daylighting in classrooms in the book ‘School architecture: practical remarks on the planning, designing, building, and furnishing of schoolhouses’. In a Danish context, the school ‘Skolen ved Sundet’ from 1938, is an early example which reflects the belief that daylight supports the wellbeing of students. Today, access to daylight is a mandatory factor in school architecture, and much research has focused on how daylight affects human comfort and learning capabilities. The impact of daylight on the health, social interaction and learning achievements of students in indoor spaces, is well documented. The present paper focuses on the implementation of this knowledge in architectural practices and the development of procedures for continuous assessment of quantitative and qualitative daylight performance throughout the design process. Further, the paper addresses recent research into the relationship between daylight design and the overall architectural atmosphere in learning environments and the importance of viewing daylight not as an isolated factor, but as part of a holistic approach. The point of departure for discussing this subject is a case study within a Norwegian context. The considered school building - Vestmyra School in Fauske - has demanding daylight requirements due to the location in the northern part of Norway. Simulation of the daylight conditions was used as an important tool in the development of spaces, which support the project specific learning principles. The case study exemplifies how the significance of daylight is taken into account in the design process, and forms the basis for discussing how procedures can be further developed to ensure a holistic approach to the architectural atmosphere in learning environments of the future. Stina Holm Jensen is M.Sc. in Architectural design from Aalborg University in 2012 and works as an architect in AART Architects, Oslo. Her primary field of work is learning environments and, as such, she is currently engaged in the development of three school buildings in Norway. As part of the research team “AART Green” she works with sustainability as an integrated part of the design process, specializing in the role of daylight for the health and wellbeing of the people who inhabit our built environment.

From skyscrapers to office buildings to museums, laminated glass has become a popular building material used in facades and interiors. Architects and designers look for laminated glass that not only has aesthetic and technical benefits, but solve a variety of architectural challenges. For more than 80 years, Saflex® architectural interlayer technology has delivered consistent performance and durability to buildings around the world by offering exciting new solutions for architectural applications. Modern design trends emphasize the liberal use of glass in building exteriors and interiors, but still keeping in mind the demand for structural integrity, interior comfort, safety and security. Compared to traditional glass, laminated glass made with Saflex®, a tough protective interlayer made of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), bonds together between two panes of glass under heat and pressure. Once sealed together, the glass "sandwich" behaves as a single unit and looks like normal glass. Saflex® interlayer provides protection upon breakage or impact from forced entry, storms or fallout by remaining intact, holding the glass fragments in place. Saflex® also provides solar and UV control to help manage heat buildup and create a comfortable environment for tenants, and help reduce fading and damage to furnishing from ultraviolet radiation. Noise reduction can also be reduced up to 50% providing a significantly higher level of sound abatement capabilities and greater dampening performance. In addition, Saflex® brings aesthetic qualities to your windows with a palette of color interlayers for your building's exterior and interior applications.

Proudly claiming its effectiveness that no one would be able to argue against its success in the form of several majestic towering temples all over Japan still standing to this day. After being subjected to harsh weather and clashes of changes in civilizations for well over a thousand years. But with the bold statement comes a clear understanding that the success to this art isn't because they designed it to withstand "against" nature, instead, it is all about being "with" nature. Moving his livelihood to New York and sharing his art form of old Japanese wood working to the world, Isao Hanafusa, co-owner of Miya Shoji, has carved himself a unique niche in the competitive market of the furnishing industry. Sought out and revered by New Yorkers wanting that embrace with nature in their interior decor with a style and durability in craftsmanship that can't be rivaled by most factory produced alternatives. All furniture selections in Miya Shoji showrooms are hand crafted, even the types lumber used in all his crafts are hand selected by Hanafusa himself. Isao Hanafusa was a graduate of Industrial Revolution studies of which he states has produced countless wonders for the modern world, but its cold machinery has also tragically killed off individual talent that is supposed to reside in craftsmen. To this day, he rejects criticisms of his methods being unnecessarily old fashioned, because with all the bold talk of technologically advanced tools and methods used in modern day construction work, the Hanafusa family believes a thousand years worth of talent refinement and mastery should not be thrown away in exchange for mass production convenience. Nor is it going to back down from the contest that their crafts will last even longer than rigid concrete and metal structures for the simple fact they are not designed to resist against the force of mother nature, but to live with her.
